My top20 Albums of the year 2007
It’s that time again, were i do my top20 albums of the year. I would like to what everybody else had as there top20, so make one up and post it on here.
Here are my top20 Albums for 2007:
1. Arctic Monkeys - Favourite Worst Nightmare
When i first listened to it i was impressed straight away, the good old monkeys feelings came straight back to me. But i was disappointed it wasn’t similar to their first album which i dearly feel in love with. But then i started to appreciate the album more and more. They did some different and pulled it off, they could have easily made an album like their first album. Brainstorm proves this, a great single, very similar to their first album stuff. But the rest of the album isn’t like Brianstorm at all, it’s got a whole different approach to it and IMHO there isn’t one bad track on on this album, it was a early starter for album of the year, and strongly stayed there through out. Well done and a massive respect for the Sheffield boys. Love your stuff!
Brilliant when i saw them live at Splendour In The Grass this year as well. They really are class and it showed at Byron Bay when they had the crowd in their hands, who were all jumping.

2. The Pigeon Detectives - Wait For Me
A surprise packet that for sure! Never really heard of them up until this year. I had seen their name around various NME mags and decided to give them a search, i hear a few demos of 'im not sorry' & 'i found out' and thought this is the next arctic monkeys! they really are a stunning band. Young & witty, these tunes have it all. Similar to Arctic Monkeys and that’s the way i like it. I like this indie band; they fully deserve any awards they get this year in the UK.
Favourite tracks: i found out, Don't Know How To Say Goodbye, im not sorry, You Better Not Look My Way, take her back, wait for me & im always right
3. The Wombats-Guide To Love & Desperation
An album brought out late this year, once again discovered from various sites. All the hype about them, i had to do something about it. So i downloaded heaps of their demos before the album got got released. It was decided then that these young lads had some talent. Allot of the album reminds me of The Beatles, with the harmonies and hand claps. I like it. they added the basics back to indie rock and like the kinks they have pulled it off. Basic rock tunes are cool. Hand claps are cool. This album is a winner. If you don’t have it, go get it! you won’t be disappointed! I played there very catchy single 'let’s dance to joy division' at revolver a couple of months ago and am 99% sure i was the first to play the wombats in public in Adelaide. Triple J thrashed there single and it was album of the week.

4. The Thrills- Teenager
I dont know what it is about this album. But it got to me, i thrashed it for along as i did 'Favourite Worst Nightmare' , and that’s a long time im not kiddin! Many hours of my life were dedicated to this album. Learning the words, thinking about the songs, singing them. It gave me many feelings, an album i will always appreciate. Sure you won’t hear it out at any indie nights, but its got everything on it, happy, sad, clappy,calm. I love it !!!
Favourite tracks: the midnight choir, restaurant, no more empty words, nothing changes round here, i came all this way & this year
5. Cut City – Exit Decades
Move over Interpol; let the Swedish under dogs take the lime light. As Interpol disappoint with their 3rd album release this year. Swedish rock band Cut City sounds almost exactly the same as Interpol, Editors & the odd joy division. It’s a solid 9 track album, with 7 tracks being crackers and to slow filler type songs at the end. I stumbled, yes completely stumbled over this band and album. I was tricked into thinking this album I had downloaded was Interpols new album. I thought I had got it 2months earlier before the official release date, at first I thought I did have Interpol’s new album. But when I listened to it closely I discovered this was not them, but it was still brilliant!!!!! Cut City I later found are a very small Swedish band who aspires to be like Interpol, Editors and Joy Division. They nailed it with there first attempt. It’s a great album and I adore it. If your into your darker side of music. This album is a must. Another surprise packet for my top20.

6. The Rakes – Ten New Messages
I like the rakes, I like their first album. And I like this album. At first I was disappointed as its not really like the quirky rakes first album. The album I had grew to know them by. This album seems to be more produced and worked on. But after awhile it got to me and I quickly realized it wasn’t to be taken lightly. Theres some great songs written on this album if anybody bothers to listen to the words carefully. I respect the rakes, the voodoo over bands 2nd albums sometimes gets to you (bloc party). But The Rakes pulled off another good album and made me happy. Its different to their first album, but in a way I liked the first album, I fell for this one in a different way. Does that make sense?

7. Editors – An End Has A Start
As much as I kind of cringed (just like everybody did) at their first single released ‘Smokers Outside The Hospital Doors’ everybody (I think) well I was anyway was pleased that the editors were back and were bringing out a new album. It had been too long! And I was kinda getting sick of dancing to Munich all the time! It was always going to be hard for them following up ‘Back Room’ but I think they did well. THeres some good songs on this album, very moody still, but still remain a bit popier than Interpol. The actually track ‘An End Has a Start’ is mega. The first time I listened to it I knew it was a hit. And if you don’t think so fcuk off! Its another ‘Munich’ type hit of theres IMO.

8. Kings Of Leon – Because of the times
Different? Yes. Shite? No. No point in putting out an album like your last two. The brother publicly said they wanted to put out something different with there 3rd album, so go let them. Accept it. They are a talented band who could put out a lot of average music and still sound brilliant due to his unique voice. When I first heard ‘Charmer’ I was screaming out like a knob. But it was different and I loved it. ‘Knocked Up’ and ‘On Call’ are also to great tracks on a very strong album. I could have put it further up my list, but its got my respect of one of the best albums this year. I cant wait to see them live. Cunts didn’t come to Adelaide!!! ARrrrrrrrrrh

9. New Young Pony Club – Fantastic Playroom
Even thought I had heard of most of the album and all the singles before the actually album was released. I still have to admit it’s a great album and has some brilliant dance tracks on it. I didn’t play the actually album that much when it came out because I had already heard most of it before. A great live dance act which I will always remember seeing this year in a shipping container. One of my favourite nights of the year. As far as gigs are concerned.

10. Mark Ronson – Version
Who is this guy? Great album. Every remix has horns! I love horns!!! Bring back the Motown I say!! The maximo park remix of ‘apply some pressure’ is better than the original!! How many mixed albums get as much reconignition as this one! Indie remixes usually suck balls! The electro ones arnt bad, but most others sucks. But Mark Ronson has made an album of them and they are all pretty ace! Cheers mark!
Ps- Amy Whinehouse voice is Valerie is simply amazing, and the remix of Valerie is a millions times better than The Zutons could muster up.

11. Sigur Ros – Hvarf Heim
Words are hide to describe what Sigur Ros continues to bring out. All you can say is that it sounds musicly perfect. With not a note or key ever to go wrong. It’s a live double disc EP which doesn’t even sound like it was recorded live. You can’t hear the crowd at all until the claps at the end. Shows how much they are respected when the audience drops at there feet to listen to these genius’s. Some words I struggle to hear, understand & even know what the singer is on about. But it’s just perfect. And I wouldn’t change a thing.

12. Interpol – Our Love to Admire
It wasn’t what everybody had hoped for. Me especially. But I still liked this Interpol album, I like there sound. So I will always be a fan. Its got some good tracks to dance too. The first single from this album ‘Heinrich Maneuver’ was strong and I liked it. But as far as singles go, that’s about as good as it gets. ‘Mammoth’ was alright. Singles aside, it doesn’t take the fact away that it’s still a good album. A very tight sounding band who I am interested seeing there new album live to see what live reaction they get.

13. Klaxons - Myths Of The Near Future
Now this is a fantastic album and could have possibly been further up the list, but I couldn’t think of who to knock down, so maybe it’s a deserving 13th spot for the nu-ravers . So we all know now there probably going to try and steer the band into the indie rock genre since nu-rave is dying. Or pretty much dead. They started it, so they can finish it. I expected a bit more from them in their live show at heaven. Not to say I was disappointed. I was still impressed. I just was expecting something different. I don’t know. It was a decent gig still.
The album has great singles. It’s a ‘singles album’ if you must. The other tracks in between the singles are soft. I had heard most of the album before it was released, so nothing too much changed my mind from the fact that I liked there sound. I was however very impressed with their cover of ‘It's Not Over Yet’, That song brought back memories! I remembered hearing that when I was very young. Golden Skans is also one of the tracks of the year.
Favourite tracks: Atlantis To Interzone, Golden Skans, Gravity's Rainbow, Magick, It's Not Over Yet, Two Receivers
14. Maximo Park - Our Earthly Pleasures
I actually like this album more than the first one. A lot more craftier tracks on this album.
Absolutely blew my mind at Fowlers Live when I saw then. They are an amazing live act and the lead singer is immense. They really do put on a show and give you your monies worth. They defiantly did not make Adelaide feel small that night.
So many great tracks in this album, but like the first album it fades away around about half way through.

15. Just Jack – Overtones
I decided to search Just Jack on the net when my girlfriend got back from New Zealand and she couldn’t stop singing ‘Starz In Their Eyes’. Which she told me was on the video music channel every day. I downloaded It. I listened. And thought to myself, this is a cracking song.
Once I had the album, I knew it was no fluke, with fellow catchy tracks like ‘Writers Block’ &’Disco Friends’
Favourite tracks: Writers Block, Disco Friends, Starz In Their Eyes, Glory Days
16. The Hives – The Black And White Album
Typical Hives, always bringing out a few cracking songs in there albums. They are such a good band. No one can take that away from them. As usual though with the hives there are some AVERAGE songs on this album. But half a good album is still good. There greatest hits album is going to be brilliant (when it comes out)

17. Babyshambles - Shotters Nation
Well well well, Babyshambles produce the goods again. I must say I like this one better than Down In Albion. Its crafty and poet. Pure Pete Doherty music. Which he does perfectly well. Delivery is a blinder of a single and a great come-back single for somebody going through all the trouble he puts himself through in his life. Does this get him side tracked from making good music? Does it fuck!
Favourite tracks: You Talk, Delivery, Carry on up the Morning, French Dog Blues
18. Hot Hot Heat - Happiness Ltd
Not a very popular album within the indie scene this year, but I grew to love it. The single ‘Let Me In’ sounds like stadium rock filler. It sounds like something a bigger band would produce and not HHH. But the albums not just about this magical first single, its got other good tracks on there. Go on, get it and listen to it a few times. You won’t be disappointed. Harmonicas & tambourines is such an indie song! --- i love it!
Favourite tracks: Let Me In, 5 times out of 100, harmonicas & tambourines, Give up?
19. The Chemical Brothers - We Are The Night
These guys feel like a million years old. I love how they keep bring out albums and rocking the world. There songs always become quickly popular on the radio. This album is electro dance heaven. ‘We are the night’ is such a good track and a stand out in this album.

20. The Enemy- We'll Live and Die in These Towns
When i first heard this hyped up NME band i thought they sounded crap and didn’t listen to it again for another 2 months. I gave it another go and did a bit of a back flip. I like it now. Its got some very catchy songs. And the lead singers once thought of annoying voice is now actually pretty good. How time changes things! I still think the lead singer of The Enemy is a twat though!

When i first heard this hyped up NME band i thought they sounded crap and didn’t listen to it again for another 2 months. I gave it another go and did a bit of a back flip. I like it now. Its got some very catchy songs. And the lead singers once thought of annoying voice is now actually pretty good. How time changes things! I still think the lead singer of The Enemy is a twat though!
